CAEL MICHAEL HANSEN

Cael was born via C-Section on Wednesday, August 27th at 9:06 a.m. The surgery was very scary for me for some reason this time. Last time with Nathan I was calm and had a sense of what was happening the whole time. This time from the beginning I was tense and scared. When they came in to do some blood work before we went in I started crying and they thought I was upset about the blood collection. I was just kind of a mess altogether. When I went in to the surgical room I got the spinal which took effect immediately. If you have never had most of your body numb let me tell you it is very difficult if you are a control freak. You lose all sense of control because you really can't move much at all. I guess this must be what it feels like to be paralyzed. Even experiencing this for a few hours is frustrating, I can't imagine it for a lifetime. Anyway, I think that the anestesia was a little too effective because I felt like it was really from the neck down which caused me to feel like I could not breathe. The whole time that they were doing the surgery I just kept saying, "I can't breathe, I can't breathe!!" My ever sensitive husband and doctor (which by the way have the same bedside manner) just kept saying, Amber you are bringing this upon yourself, it's your anxiety, you can breathe just fine. Seriously, I felt like I was being asphixiated!! Well, before I even knew that the process was underway, I heard crying and he was here. While he was doing the surgery he said, Amber your uterus is worn out, there is a lot of scar tissue so you can only have one or two more kids. I told my friend who has 7 kids last night that when people ask me if I am going to have any more kids after we have 4 that I can just sadly say, No the doctor told me that my uterus was worn out and I couldn't have anymore. This can be my new excuse for not being a good Mormon woman and having 10 kids!! It's a pretty good reason don't you think?
They put him up to my face after he was born and I got to see him for just a few minutes before they wheeled me away into 2 hours of recovery. I got into the recovery room and it took forever to start feeling my legs. She told me that this anestesiologist does a strong spinal which could have explained the breathing problem. My blood pressure got as high as 193/99 and they had to keep me there until it started to get better. This problem persisted throughout my hospital stay. I don't know why I have this problem, but I did with Nathan also. The high blood pressure starts about 2 days before the surgery. I guess it could be the anxiety of it all.
I found out in recovery that the baby was 7 lbs 1 ounce, 19 and 1/2 inches long. We were pretty sure his name would be Cael at this point, but not sure about the middle name. We finally decided when they brought us the paperwork for the birth certificate that he would be Cael Michael. Trent has long admired the Iowa wrestler Cael Sanderson. Although we have two of Trent's cousins boys' named Kael, we don't see them that much unfortunately, but we decided that it would be ok to use that name. What is the saying? That copying is a form of flattery? I know I'm not saying it right, but you get the idea. My dad's name is Michael, but we didn't necessarily choose that name because of that reason, we just thought it sounded like a strong name.
The day after he was born, Trent brought the boys to the hospital to meet their new baby brother. I have only ever been away from Nathan for a matter of hours so to be gone a day and in the hospital was a little much for him to take. Even Tyler seemed a little spooked when he saw me. They came into the room and I asked Nathan if he wanted to sit on the bed by me he started screaming and crying and saying, Daddy and would only sit by Trent. Trent showed him the baby and said, this is your new baby brother, we get to take him home with us. Nathan got mad and said, no, no want him. We laughed, but he was pretty upset. Tyler held Cael, but when I look at those pictures from the hospital I can tell that even he was not sure about the whole thing. So, it has been 10 days now and I can't even believe it. The boys are adjusting well to having Cael at home. Nathan cannot quite say baby so he calls him "boo-boo." He is starting to say Cael's name. He gets diapers and wipes for us when he needs his diaper changed. If it's messy he stands over him and says, Yuck over and over again and then he goes and gets us a sack to put it in and puts it by the garage door to go to the garage. Tyler, well he's Tyler, Mr. Independent, having a baby around doesn't even phase him. When Cael wakes up from his naps they are hovering and want to see him. He thinks it's pretty neat, but other than that he didn't even miss a beat in his little 5-year-old life.
Cael sleeps around the clock, well except for at midnight when I want to be sleeping, then he is wide-eyed and ready to party for awhile. Trent tells me that it's because i need to keep him awake more during the day. I told him that he needs to try and keep him awake and see how that goes. His weight is now 6 lbs 11 oz and it's hard for a tiny little baby to be awake for very long. He is a good little baby. We have been very lucky so far to have little "angel" babies as the Baby Whisperer calls them. By the way for those of you having new babies I will never stop trying to promote her style for schedule. I am telling you it makes your life so much easier, thank you to my best friend and sister-in-law Rebecca for telling me over and over again that I just had to try it. So that's that. He's here, he's healthy and we love him, our little Cael.
